Project Management, Temporary Works Design & Construction
Nationwide Rail were contracted to C Spencer Ltd to construct a 40m extension to platform 6. Platform 6 is an island platform with difficult plant access so the design was developed to manually transport all materials into position.
This resulted in a lightweight steel frame on concrete strip foundations which was bolted together in a glorified “Meccano” system. On top of the steel frame were FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic) panels interlocked and bolted to the steel frame to form the platform.
Between the new and existing platform construction was a transition chamber of blockwork, granular infill and tarmac surfacing.
The platform extension was completed within 9 weeks from start to finish during a combination of day and nightshifts working around existing signal structures and location cases.
