West Burton & Cottam Power Station
Nationwide Engineering Ltd were contracted to replace defective construction joints to reinforced concrete slabs and walls in the fuel bund location on both power stations. This arose from an Environment Agency inspection the outcome of which pointed out grave concerns should the fuel tanks leak. The 50-year-old joints had deteriorated to the extent that they were no longer effective.
Nationwide Engineering designed a number of alternative replacement joints which were accepted by EDF Energy. These were a mixture of polysulphide and epoxy resin injection joints.
In all, over 2,000 linear metres of joints were replaced, all within a 6-week period. This included raking out and disposing of existing joint material.
